The Industrial Average (The Dow Jones Industrial Average, to give it its full title) also known as just the Dow Jones, or the Dow, is one of several indices created by Charles Dow, co-founder of Dow Jones & Company.

The original intention of the Dow was to measure the performance of the industrial sector, and its likely impact on the American economy, but the index is also affected by political events including natural disasters and wars.

Companies in index: Exxon, General Motors, Goodyear, IBM.
